Don’t Do the Math 😳

Me the last three weeks after receiving my estimate.

Afternoon My Lovelies! In case you were wondering, I did not take another hiatus 😁. Life got a little intense for a moment so I took a breather. But now I’m feeling in rare form so let’s talk about why we shouldn’t do the math in certain cases.

Last week, I had outpatient surgery on my lady bits. About every 15 years or so, I seem to have issues in that area requiring surgery. This was the latest go round. Before you ask all is well, at least for the next 15 years 😜. As part of the whole rigmarole (isn’t that a great word?) I was provided with my estimate for an OUTPAITIENT SURGERY (All caps are to make a specific point about the type of surgery I was having. It comes into play in a moment) and my portion, which basically met my very high deductible in one swoop.

Side note – My insurance guy that helps me register for my healthcare asked if I might need surgery in 2024 and I of course being ridiculously overconfident and relatively healthy for my age said no. So I blame him for putting it out into the universe (ok, not really but you have to admit it is a coincidence).

Now back to the main point. While waiting to be drugged, I decided to look at the entire estimate for my OUTPATIENT SURGERY and I nearly fell off the bed. You see, even though it was outpatient, it was done at a hospital versus a clinic which most likely quadrupled the price of my surgery that I was in and out of in about 4 1/12 hours start to finish (walking in the door to being wheeled out). And then I did the math. My OUTPATIENT SURGERY cost $7k per hour 🤯🤯. Of which I owe a fourth of (completely my fault for not lowering my deductible). I couldn’t believe my relatively minor surgery cost that much. And I’m not even sure if that includes the anesthesiologist 😳😳 (wow – spelled it right on the first try).

Thank the goddess I was still a little high when I figured that all out 😮‍💨. However I am still reeling from the cost days later.

I fear for the state of our healthcare.

All of this to say – sometimes you just shouldn’t do the math 😉.

Until next time ✌️✌️.

By the way, according to the estimate most of the cost were hospital related. I say this in case you ever have to have outpatient surgery at a hospital so you don’t get sticker shock.
